BLACK LAW ENFORCEMENT ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS COMMUNITY SAFETY EDUCATION ACT SENATE BILL 30
Too often we hear of stories of negative interactions between drivers and police officers. Many of these occurrences can be prevented if we all get on the same page and show respect from both sides. Thankfully, The State of Texas has created a law to do just that. It requires all high school and driver education students be provided specific instruction on how to interact with law enforcement. As well, law enforcement will also receive instruction on how to lawfully interact with their fellow citizens (SB.ORG) Traffic stops can be one of the most dangerous tasks performed by an officer. Traffic stops are also highly stressful for drivers. To benefit both populations, the Community Safety Education Act supports the implementation of the 7-step protocol of traffic stops are taught to citizens, and officers. The training emphasized respect, de-escalation techniques, citizens’ rights and safety.
COMMUNITY SAFETY EDUCATION ACT SENATE BILL 30- Relating to inclusion of instruction regarding interaction with peace officers in the required curriculum for certain Education & Training on Proper Interaction between Peace Officers and Citizens interactions includes:
● The role of law enforcement and the duties and responsibilities of peace officers.
● A demonstration of the proper actions to be taken during traffic stop
● A person's rights concerning interactions with peace officers.
● Proper behavior for civilians and peace officers during interactions.
● Laws regarding questioning and detention by peace officers, including any law requiring a person to present proof of identity to a peace officer, and the consequences for a person’s or officer’s failure to comply with those laws.
● how and where to file a complaint against or a compliment on behalf of a peace officer.
